Local radio station helps youth recruit mentors

Students from GoodGuides®, a youth mentoring program in Berks County, got the opportunity to spread the word about their program. At one of their Monday night activities Vince Angelo, Ricky Phillips and Krysta Blocher from Y102 lent their expertise to help the students create a Public Service Announcement (PSA).

The program is in need of adult mentors, who are paired with youth between the ages of 12 and 17, and are at risk for dropping out of school, facing legal troubles, or are at risk for delinquency. The adult mentors help the youth prepare for school completion and look forward to post-secondary education.

Currently GoodGuides is recruiting new mentors and mentees until February and thanks to Y102, they are able to get the word out about the program. The students were broken up into two groups at the activity and were asked to come up with a PSA to recruit mentors and one to recruit mentees.

Just last week a select few were able to go to Y102 to record these PSA’s. The advertisements will be running through the end of the year.

If you live in the Berks County area and would like to learn more about becoming a mentor please visit www.yourgoodwill.org or call Zylkia Rivera at 484.769.5873.

Happy Cyber Monday!

Happy Cyber Monday! As the days tick down to Christmas, I plan on doing most of my shopping online. Among the many sites I visit to shop for various family members and friends, I always like to check out shopgoodwill.org. They have a variety of unique things that will make the perfect gift for someone I know. Plus I always tend to find something for myself as well!

And while you are already online, check out yourgoodwill.org/farm to buy tasty Homefield Farm Gift Boxes for friends and family.

The Perfect Gift

With the holiday season in full swing, I like to think ahead to those impromptu gifts, the gifts that you should have on hand for unexpected gift givers. So this year I’m ordering a bunch of gift boxes from Goodwill at Homefield Farm. They are awesome to have for those “just in case” moments. Each box contains a bag of Wilbur Buds (yum!), Coffee Roasters Coffee, Kauffman’s Apple Butter, and a bag of S. Clyde Weaver peanut butter pretzels. They are only $17.50 and you can have them shipped all over the United States. Plus all the proceeds from the box benefits Goodwill at Homefield Farm, which provides rewarding horticultural and agricultural employment and training opportunities for adults with disabilities. It’s a win-win solution for this holiday season!

The wonders of shopgoodwill.com!

Whether you are ready, the holiday season has arrived! To combat the stress of the shopping season and make sure everyone gets something special, I like to start early. But there are always those few people on my list that are hard to shop for. So I use shopgoodwill.com. I don’t even have to leave my house. I can check it as often as I want. Shopgoodwill.com has some very unique items that those hard to shop for people might like. Check out the photo below from a shopgoodwill.com customer. She bought two silver greyhound statues and has put them to good use! You can find some pretty unique items, anything from antiques, jewelry, and my favorite- tools! With any luck, shopgoodwill.com will save me from the crowded stores and parking lots this holiday season!

You don’t have to be a PA native to shop on shopgoodwill.com either. Check out this awesome blog from Arizona. She loves shopping on shopgoodwill.com! http://omeneye.blogspot.com/

Changing of the seasons means changing of the wardrobe!

Summer is over and as sad as I am to no longer have those nice, hot days I am looking forward to a change in season. Not exactly for the weather, but for the clothes! The changing of the seasons is the perfect excuse to go shopping! But for someone who can generally come up with any reason to shop, I need to be smart and pinch those pennies. So I checked out my local Goodwill Store and found some trendy accessories and jackets for the fall and winter months. Since I had to make room for some new things, I donated my clothes that I am no longer wearing. I just love recycling!

New Dress A Day

The Goodwill Runway Show is just 10 days away and I have nothing to wear! While searching online for some re-useable outfit ideas, I stumbled upon this amazing blog called New Dress a Day. This chick Marisa is tweaking cheap finds and making fabulous outfits for under $1 a day. I’m feeling inspired, so I think I’m going to head to the Goodwill Outlet Center in Shillington to get my very own treasure for just 75 cents!

Gearing up for back-to-school

The summer is winding down, and that means one thing to moms everywhere, the kiddos are going back-to-school! I have found with three kids that buying clothes for the upcoming school year can cost a small fortune. I am constantly looking for new places to shop that won’t put a strain on my wallet. That’s why this year, I’m going to Goodwill.

At Goodwill, I can stock up on clothing for the school year without breaking the bank. This is especially important when you have kids who seem to be growing by the day! Everyone can pick out what they want, and by the end of the day I still have money left in my wallet!

Plus, when you shop at all Goodwill Stores, you are helping to support the mission to support people with disabilities and other barriers to independence in achieving their fullest potentials as workers and as members of the broader community. A bargain and helping out a good cause is my idea of the perfect back-to-school store!

Let Your Creativity Flow

Being a bargain hunter isn’t easy, but when you find that great deal, it’s so worth it. As a Bargainista, you can find beautiful items at a great price. Take your house décor for example. There are so many clever thrifty ways to make your house look good.

I found these ideas from another blog about chic tips to decorating your home. Check it out!! http://parenting.leehansen.com/decorating/thrift-store-decor.htm

A good bargain is only really a good bargain if you can enjoy your purchase for more than just the low price. Your best bet is to go specifially in search of the item you need. When you find that perfect item, you’ll enjoy it both in your home and in your bank account.

Remember, a great bargain is just around the corner at your local Goodwill.

Fashion on the Go

Save time! People are always looking for ways to get more time. There never seems to be enough of it. For those of us who want more time while getting great fashion deals, these tips could be your new best fashion time savers.

#1 – Make sure you try on the clothes. Tags that are on the clothes may be slightly off because of previous wearing and shrinking. Also, designers can  vary their sizes, which could also throw it off. This will save you time if you try them on now instead of getting home and realizing that the clothes you just spent your valuable time shopping for are the wrong size. Pity.

#2 – Lets say you want to stand out a party. Get your dress from a thrift shop and you can all but guarantee that no one else will have your dress. It probably was not worn that much and, with how quickly fashions change, your mild throwback dress could make you the cat’s meow at your next shindig.

#3 – Love a pair of jeans with a broken zipper or that shirt with a missing button? Go ahead and buy them, those are easy things to replace! Stay away from clothing with rips or stains. Those could take too much time to fix or not be fixable at all.
