Remembering Barry R. Landis - Board Member, Goodwill Supporter, Friend

The Goodwill Keystone Area family was greatly saddened to learn of the passing of longtime board member and volunteer, Barry R. Landis.

Barry was a great example of servant leadership in action. He served as Board Chair, Chair of the 1991 capital campaign, and founding board member of the Goodwill Keystone Area Foundation. In 2001, Barry was one of a core group of directors who oversaw the first and only merger of three Goodwills into present-day GKA.

Throughout his decades of service to GKA, Barry found time not only for governance but also for volunteering. He used his professional expertise as a jeweler and gemologist to identify and appraise thousands of jewelry pieces for the Goodwill Treasures fundraiser and for ShopGoodwill, helping to bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars in mission-supporting revenue. In addition, he passed on his knowledge to staff to ensure that GKA receives the maximum value for the community’s generous donations.

Barry was a great advocate for GKA. He worked tirelessly, always with a quiet and unassuming demeanor. No matter the calling, Barry was there to help. At one of the first GKA fundraisers, Jubilee Day in Mechanicsburg, Barry remained from dawn to dusk. When the idea was presented to lay quarters end to end across the Walnut Street Bridge, Barry joined the planning committee for what would become the Goodwill Silver Mile. When the World’s Largest Yard Sale, a precursor to Goodwill Treasures, was created, Barry was in the thick of it. More recently, Barry, along with his wife, Suzanne, was a member of the Goodwill Treasures committee and was instrumental in bringing the event to fruition.

The GKA family is truly appreciative of all the contribution Barry and his family have made to our cause over the years. He will be sorely missed as a board member, as a volunteer, as a unique individual, and as a friend.
