Donate Stuff, Get Tax Deduction

December is a good time to think about donating stuff. The holiday season is the perfect time of year to gather those no longer needed items and donate to Goodwill. It’s not only a great way to de-clutter but also, a donation before the end of the year can quality for a tax deduction.

By donating clothing or housewares to Goodwill, donors can earn a tax deduction for 2016 while helping to sustain the important programs that Goodwill provides to the community. Federal law permits Goodwill donors to claim tax deductions for donated clothing and household goods in good, used condition or better. Donors interested in claiming a tax deduction should create itemized lists. The Internal Revenue Service requires donors to value each item and deduct the fair market value of each item. Goodwill donor attendants will provide a receipt that meets IRS guidelines for donations.

Goodwill stores and donation centers will be open until 5pm on Saturday, December 31. For more information about hours and locations, go to https://www.yourgoodwill.org/shop/stores-donation-centers/

The mission of Goodwill Keystone Area, a local non-profit, is to support persons with disabilities and other barriers to independence in achieving their fullest potential as workers and as members of the broader community.
