Goodwill Accepts Computer Donations; Cannot Take TVs

Donation Centers within Goodwill Keystone Area, 22 Pennsylvania counties, are unable to accept TVs; however, the organization is accepting computers and related accessories such as monitors, desktops or laptops, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice and speakers. Residential donors can drop off any brand of used computer equipment in any condition at a Goodwill Keystone Donation Center. It's free and donors can receive a receipt for tax purposes. Goodwills from across the country, including Goodwill Keystone Area, teamed up with Dell in a computer recycling program called Dell Reconnect. In the Goodwill Keystone Area territory, computers are collected at donation centers and then, securely packaged and prepared for Dell's designated recyclers to pick up and demanufacture.

Some items may require extra preparation before you bring them in so remember to remove your personal data from hard drives or other storage media before donating to Goodwill. For more information about this program, go to www.dell.com/reconnect.

In March 2012, Goodwill Keystone Area made the decision to no longer accept TVs as a donation. With many people transitioning from large box TVs to flat screens, Goodwill received a high-volume of older TVs and many were not working. Additionally, despite an overwhelming selection of TVs at rock-bottom prices, the TVs were not selling within the stores. Goodwill is searching for a partner to help recycle TVs, so Goodwill can once again accept TVs.

The mission of Goodwill Keystone Area, a nonprofit, is to support persons with disabilities and other barriers to independence in achieving their fullest potential as workers and as members of the broader community. To fund the mission, Goodwill collects and sells donated items in stores in 22 counties in central and southeastern Pennsylvania. Goodwill offers job training programs. Goodwill’s philosophy is that work is a building block of community and that when people are given an opportunity to work, their self-esteem increases and other problems are minimized. Last year, more than 4,300 people received life-changing services from Goodwill Keystone Area.
